The University of Pavia

The University of Pavia (link) is one of the oldest universities in Europe, originally founded in 825 by King Lotharius as a prestigious school dedicated to Law, Science and Medicine. In 1361 the Studium Generale was established by the Duke of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, under decree of the Emperor Carlo IV of Luxemburg.

A number of renowned scholars have taught at the Alma Ticinensis Universitas, including the inventor of the electric cell, Alessandro Volta, the poet Ugo Foscolo and Nobel Laureates Camillo Golgi, Giulio Natta and Carlo Rubbia.

Today the University of Pavia is multidisciplinary, with 18 departments (link) and 11 student residence halls, some of which date back to the 15th century. Each year, thousands of young people have the opportunity to live, study, carry out research, participate in sports and join the international community in Pavia.

The world champions of canoeing and rowing have studied and trained in Pavia; important boat races, such as Pavia-Pisa and Pavia-Oxford, are held on the Ticino River and the university hosts intercollegiate team sports tournaments. The University Sports Center (CUS) and the Motor Sciences Department offer modern training facilities for sports such as: track and field, canoeing, rowing, volleyball, rugby, fencing, archery, sports for the physically challenged, aerobics, basketball, swimming and sailing.
